Washington DC Newborn Session

Creating a safe and healthy newborn session protocol during a global pandemic

As a Washington DC in-home newborn photographer, I feel incredibly honored to be invited into a new family’s home to capture their early days together. You can almost feel the protective cocoon that parent’s have created, and I don’t take it lightly that I am often one of the first non-family members to come to their home after baby has arrived.

This was especially true in 2020. As a non-essential business, I adhered to local regulations and stopped all sessions for a number of months. As we all know, even if it seemed like the world stood still, life truly did march on and so many sweet babies were born, bringing joy to their families in truly trying times. I was grateful for clients who reached out, knowing we would not be able to do their session for an unspecified amount of time, and who worked with me to develop protocols that made us all feel safe.

This was my first session after DC begin to re-open, and while you can’t see it in the images, we were taking every precaution we could imagine - open windows, masks whenever not on camera, keeping a healthy distance at all time, and crucially, 2 weeks of quarantining at home before the session! I was anxious, but I also knew that I was capturing this incredibly important time for these new parents, who were navigating parenthood without the physical support a community often provides. These images were their way of sharing their wonderful new arrival with their world, and I was so grateful to be able to help in that.
