Alexandria Newborn Session
A classic PLUME in-home newborn photography session for a growing Alexandria VA family.
As a Washington DC based Newborn photographer, many of my clients come to me from referrals made by other clients - in fact, I only take new family session clients by referral! And because they have been referred to PLUME by friends, colleagues or family, they are usually familiar with my photography style and have a sense of what to expect, but I always like to chat with them to give them a bit more information - a sort of a “what to expect” when you work with PLUME guide.
In terms of style, PLUME Newborn photography is best categorized as Lifestyle Photography. Lifestyle Newborn photography combines elements of documentary/reportage photography with fine art / aesthetic photography. The goal of Lifestyle Photography is to document a real-life event in a visually appealing way.
What does that mean for you? It means you’ll be given gentle direction and guidance throughout the session, but we won't be fussing with overly posed images. Rather, I will find the best light, place you and your family in it and encourage you to interact and engage naturally within that space. And as any of my clients will tell you, you’ll get lots of positive affirmations and feedback throughout the session so you’ll never feel like you’re unsure of what’s working or not.
For lifestyle newborn sessions, we include everyone in your household, including the four-legged ones! I love to let older siblings help “art direct” and choose where everyone should sit or how they want to sit or stand in an image. (This is also a fun time to let them break the rules and jump on the bed!)
With Lifestyle Newborn Photography, there are solo shots of your new baby, but the primary focus will be you holding and/or engaging with your child. Unlike posed newborn portraits, I do not use props or do elaborate posing of your child. A swaddle is always a fun element (if your baby likes to be swaddled!) and I love incorporating nursery images and any family heirlooms into the session in an organic way.
The goal for your newborn session is to spend a (relatively) quiet morning (typically we do in-home lifestyle newborn sessions in the mid to late morning) snuggling and gazing at your new baby, cuddling and giggling with your older kids, and embracing and leaning on your partner in support and awe of the life you’ve built.
