Why family photos are important
As a Washington DC-based newborn and family photographer, and a life-long student of art-history, I often find myself contemplating the why behind my work. Beyond the aesthetics (taking pretty pictures is a delightful job!), what is the purpose of the work I do? And with family photos, it’s a pretty easy answer - I help to craft a tangible legacy that tells the story of who you are: your family, exactly as it is.

More than simply marking the passage of time, family photos - whether they be vacation snapshots or professional portraits - help to reinforce the very idea of who your family is, both simply by virtue of capturing their physical presence, but also by capturing individual and collective personalities, the connection you share, and they way you fit together as a family.
But it’s not just about taking the photos, displaying family photos actually has a profound impact on children. Studies have shown that children who grow up in homes where family photos are physically displayed (not just on phone screens!) have a greater sense of self-confidence and self-esteem, and it helps them develop their identity and sense of self. Which is a pretty terrific reason to take family photos, in my book!
